Unicycle Hockey

Playing Unicycle Hockey is an excellent way to improve basic unicycling skills. It helps with speed and manoeuvrability and leads to more instinctive control of the unicycle. The game is based on Ice Hockey but with a lot less contact.

Main Rules

1. There are five players per team. There are no specific rules relating to goalkeepers. I.e. the goalie is treated the same as any other player.
2. The ball can only be played when a player is riding the unicycle. i.e. not touching the ground.
3. Putting your stick under or through someone else's wheel is a foul.
4. A goal can only be scored from within your opponents half.
5. You can play the ball with your hand but you cannot score a goal like that.
6. Each half starts with the referee throwing the ball onto the centre spot between one player of each team.
7. After a goal the non-scoring team restarts by playing the ball over the half way line.

Safety Rules

1. The bottom of the stick must not be lifted above hip height.
2. One hand must always be placed at the top end of the stick. You can swap which hand is at the top and play either one or two handed but the stick should not be handled with the top end uncovered.
3. The stick must not be released or thrown intentionally.

More details can be found in the International Unicycle Hockey Rules.

Proposed rules for the UK Unicycle Hockey League are here. These rules are currently in use but are evolving as the league develops.

Previous Seasons

The following is a list of tournaments and results from past seasons, or it will be one day...

UK Unicycle Hockey League - Proposed Rules

General

The League year runs from BUC to BUC.

The League is separate from the BUC tournament. The BUC tournament winners get the UUU Hockey sheild. The league champions get the UUU Cup.

Every Club should attempt to host one league tournament per year.

Clubs may not host more than one league tournament per year.

The league rules will be reviewed annually at BUC.

Rules

Games will be played using IUF Hockey rules except where established UK practice is different.

Games will be played with a dead tennis ball

Points

The format of each tournament will be "round robin", where every team plays every other team.

At the end of the tournament the club teams will be ranked from winner through to last runner up based only on the games where club teams played. Games involving scratch teams will not count towards the ranking of teams for league points. Points will be allocated from the bottom of the ranking starting with 1 point for the lowest placed club team, 2 for second lowest etc.

For a tournament with 4 teams the points would be as follows

1st Place - Team A - 4 points
2nd Place - Team B - 3 points
3rd Place - Team C - 2 points
4th Place - Team D - 1 points

This scoring system rewards all teams with 1 point for turning up plus 1 point for each team beaten.

Points will be totalled up over the year and the winner of the league will be the club team with the greatest number of points.

Initially points from all tournaments will count towards the total for each club team for the year, however if this leads to big gaps between teams this may be changed to the best X results for each club team where X is less than the number of tournaments played in that year.

Club Teams

A club team can contain any number of players, but only 5 of those players may be on the pitch at a time

Each player may only play for one club any season, if a player moves club during the year they must either play for their old club until the next BUC or they may play in scratch teams until the next BUC. This rule may be waived if the majority of players at the next tournament agree that the move is fair

Scratch Teams

To encourage participation by smaller clubs and individuals each tournament will allow entries by scratch teams formed from players from more than one club.

A scratch team may only play together for one tournament. If more than 3 players from a scratch team play together at more than one tournament then they will be treated as a club team and will be subject to club team rules.

Games involving scratch teams will not be counted when calculating league points, but will count towards the results of the tournament, i.e. a scratch team can win a tournament, but this will not affect the number of league points awarded to club teams.
